Hiring Process 

  • You must be at least 18 years of age and not have made your 37th birthday to apply for firefighter.
  • You must take and pass the Civil Service Entrance Exam with a grade of 75 or above. You must submit your application to the department at which you are testing, before the testing deadline. Each department's requirements for applying for testing may vary, so please call that department's contact person.

  • Once you have taken the test, you should receive the results in four to six weeks.
  • Once you have received a copy of your score, you must complete an application with our department. Attachments must include a copy of your birth certificate, driver's license, high school diploma, high school or college transcript. You may also include EMS certifications such as First Responder, EMT or Paramedic and Haz-Mat training. Veterans must include a DT-214 form. This process is referred to as "transferring your grade." This grade will remain valid for 18 months from the date of approval.
  • Our department will then submit your application to Monroe Civil Service Board for approval. Once approved you will be placed on our eligibility list until the grade expires. If you are not hired within this time, you must take the test again. Applicants must maintain a valid test score until hired.
  • You will be contacted by mail and phone when we begin our hiring process. If your contact information changes, you are responsible for informing us of this change. Information on our hiring process is available in our Recruit Brochure.

 

 

The goals and future growth of the Monroe Fire Department depend on having persons who are willing to work harder than they have ever in their life, learn more than they ever have learned, and are willing to challenge themselves to graduate the Academy.

Applicants for the Monroe Fire Department must complete a multi-step hiring process. This process may take up to or over two months to complete.

Applications must take the State of Louisiana Fire and Police Civil Service Exam. This exam is given by the State Examiner's Office. Applicant must score above 75% in order to pass this exam. This exam is valid up to 18 months.

Applicants must complete a Physical Ability Exam for our department. This test will help determine if an individual is physically fit to perform firefighter duties.

Interview with the MFD Interview Committee is the next step. This interview is conducted by current members, including a Firefighter, Fire Driver, Fire Captain, and Chief Officers of the department.

Background Screens are conducted by the Fire Investigation Division. Criminal background checks and Voice Stress Analysis are performed.

The Fire Chief's interview is the final interview before the employee selection.

After the employee selection is made, a Conditional Offer of Employment is made. This offer is only valid if the applicant passes a drug screen, physical fitness examination and any other requirements requested by the department.

 

The final process for the applicants is the completion of 18 weeks of vigorous military style training in our Recruit Academy. This training will give you the basic essentials of becoming a Class 1 Monroe Fire Department Firefighter. The learning process is continuous through hands-on experience and classroom studies.

Firefighters primarily receive training for the tasks required to perform as a Monroe firefighter. Such training may consist of formal classroom study and drill sessions, as well as closely supervised on-the-job experience. Employees of this class are supervised by Fire Captains and this class ranks directly below the Fire Driver.

Some, but not all, of the duties required of the Firefighters are:

  • Performing firefighting tasks such as laying, connecting, carrying and operating hose lines, using heavy tools to ventilate buildings, and forcible entry tools to enter structures.
  • Salvage and overhaul operations, such as searching for hidden fires in burned areas of structures and removing recoverable items from burned structures.
  • Operating hydraulic tools for vehicle rescue.
  • Emergency medical care such as first aid and patient assessment.
  • Participating in assigned training drills.
  • Attending special schools or workshops.
  • Clean, inspect, and properly secure any assigned firefighting equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform tasks necessary for the proper maintenance of the stations and grounds.
  • Perform public relations duties such as providing information to the public concerning the mission of the department and conducting station tours for individuals or civic groups and schools.
  • Perform any other task as delegated by his or her Fire Captain.
