Mayor Jamie Mayo, today, announces Major Eugene Ellis as Interim Police Chief of the Monroe Police Department, effective August 1, 2017. Ellis is a 31-year veteran of the Monroe Police Department. He will replace outgoing Monroe Police Chief Dr. Quentin Holmes, who recently announced his retirement, effective
July 31, 2017.

Mayor Jamie Mayo comments, “Major Ellis has served in multiple capacities in his 31-years of public service. He rose from the ranks of a patrol officer to major. He will provide stable leadership during the transition period from the end of Chief Holmes tenure until the selection of a new permanent Chief of Police.”

ABOUT INTERIM CHIEF EUGENE ELLIS:
1. Began employment with MPD in 1986 as a Patrolman.
2. Worked as a Special Investigator with Metro Narcotics Unit of Ouachita
3. Worked in various roles - Criminal Intervention Bureau, Intelligence Division, and Internal Affairs
4. Served as Commander of the Administrative Bureau since January 2015

Next Steps in the Process toward Selecting a New Police Chief

There is a process that must take place before a new Police Chief can be selected. Here is a brief outline of
what will take place over the course of the next four to six months.

1. Mayor Mayo will make an official request to the local Civil Service Board to place on their next meeting agenda (August 15) a measure to approve the call for a Chief’s Exam.
2. A new exam will be created.
3. A date will be set for the exam to be administered, and public notice will be made.
4. Once the exam scores are reviewed – a list of qualified candidates will be selected for interviews.
5. Mayor Mayo will select a new Chief of Police.
6. The new Chief of Police will go before the Monroe City Council for final confirmation.
